01 / FOUNDATION
Vitamin C (ascorbic acid) is an essential water-soluble vitamin. The body needs it to make collagen, absorb some non-heme iron, and support normal immune function. Humans cannot make vitamin C themselves.
02 / CONTEXT
Citrus fruits, berries, kiwi, peppers, broccoli and other vegetables are good sources. A varied diet can meet vitamin C needs for many people.
03 / EVIDENCE, NOT HYPE
Vitamin C prevents deficiency and supports normal body functions. Regular supplementation does not prevent most colds, although it may slightly shorten their duration in some people. High-dose supplements have not been established as a way to prevent or treat cancer.
How we read research ↗04 / THE LABEL
Common supplement forms include ascorbic acid and mineral ascorbates. Research has not established that a marketed specialty form is generally superior for health outcomes. Look at total milligrams rather than branding alone.
05 / SAFETY FIRST
Large doses can cause diarrhea and digestive upset and may be a concern for some people with kidney problems or other medical conditions. People undergoing cancer treatment should discuss high-dose antioxidant supplements with their oncology team.
06 / INFORMED CHOICES
An honest guide should help you decide whether a supplement makes sense—including when the answer may be no.
