What does it do?
Folate supports DNA synthesis, normal cell division and the formation of healthy blood cells. Meeting needs is important at every life stage.
Where can I get it in food?
Lentils, beans, leafy greens, asparagus, avocado and enriched or fortified grains.
When might a supplement make sense?
Folic acid supplementation is especially important before and during early pregnancy. Outside specific needs or deficiency, more supplemental folic acid is not necessarily helpful.
What should I be careful about?
Excess folic acid can mask the anaemia of B12 deficiency while neurologic injury continues. Discuss high-dose use and possible medication interactions with a clinician.
How does this connect with Blue Zones?
Folate-rich foods overlap with the vegetables and legumes of many healthy dietary patterns. This does not mean folic acid supplements have been shown to extend life.
